Newcastle upon Tyne's City Centre Business Improvement District Company NE1 Limited has a success on its hands! And it's helping young people find a brighter future. Newcastle's business community is starting to see and feel the benefits of NE1 and YMCA Newcastle's joint investment in the Space 2 drop-in initiative. In the past 6 months year Space 2 helped 238 young people into jobs, apprenticeships, interviews or back into education.  This figure equates to nearly 15% of the city's young NEETs (not in employment, education or training).

NE1 has been investing in Space 2…since 2013.  The centre provides a range of services for young people including careers advice, training, interview techniques and placements and is the Newcastle business community's response to the problem of youth unemployment. The centre, managed by YMCA Newcastle with support from training provider, Newcastle Futures, also provides a place for young people to meet and hang out with friends, making use of the hi-tech computers, games consoles and equipment housed at the facility in Newgate Street. Space 2… works closely with Newcastle's business community across all industry sectors to provide a unique and direct link between business and young people.  The facility has been invaluable in putting businesses in touch with young people and vice versa.  The link has allowed companies to highlight the skills and training they want in new recruits. Using this knowledge and NE1's established business links, Space 2… works with young people and with training providers to help equip candidates with the necessary qualifications and training to secure jobs with these and other employers.

The overriding aim of Space 2.. is to create opportunities for young people in education, training and jobs whilst improving the quality of the jobs they apply for.
Investment by NE1 Ltd and YMCA Newcastle, who manage the centre, is now clearly paying off, over the last few months Space 2… has provided a wealth of young talent for interview by amongst others the new international hotel that will be based in the Stephenson Quarter, behind the Central Station.

Michelle Percy, Commercial Director of the Clouston Group, (formerly Silverlink Developments) commented; "Our new development at Stephenson Quarter, in particular the Crowne Plaza Hotel, is going to rely on the skills and quality of the personnel it employs, it is critical to its success and that of the City.  We must work to raise standards and opportunities for our young people and NE1 are leading that objective."
NE1's investment in - Space2 is also very cost efficient - calculating the running costs of Space 2 and dividing the total by the number of young people who have found jobs, apprenticeships or training -  the figure equates to approximately £600 per person. This is a fraction of the cost associated with a number of the public sector "back to work" schemes with similar objectives.

Commenting on the success at NE1's Space 2, Sean Bullick, Chief Executive of NE1 Ltd explained;"We're delighted with Space 2's success rate.  Finding jobs, apprenticeships or college places for 150 young people is a huge achievement within the context of there being around 980 NEETS in Newcastle.

"Local economic strategies are focused on raising the number of skilled jobs, those that add significant value to the local economy. At Space 2… NE1 is helping to create a young workforce who can help shape and fill these roles."

"Space 2 is a great working model of how successful and cost effective a solution can be when businesses do it for themselves."

Jeff Hurst, YMCA Newcastle and Manager of NE1's Space 2… said: "Space 2.. works with young people from all different  backgrounds offering a broad range of help and advice.  One of the most rewarding things we've seen over the past two years is watching how with the right help, support and guidance, young people can reach their true potential and high flyers have been able to soar."
